Andaz London Liverpool: Railway History, Street Art Luxury

The Andaz London Liverpool is an original London railway hotel where history melds with fantastic street art and modern luxury.

An Original London Railway Hotel

I was fascinated with the fact the Andaz London Liverpool was one of the original railway hotels. Once known as the Great Eastern Hotel, it was a place of glamour during the High Victorian age.

Set near railway transport, railway hotels had the luxurious convenience of receiving provisions directly such as deliveries of saltwater for hotel baths.  Today the property is the Andaz London Liverpool, completely refurbished yet continuing its grand presence in its own way.

The stunning red brick 19th century Victorian building sets you back in the past, yet when you walk through its doors to step into a modern experience, with hip flair, chic design and elegance abound.

Andaz London Liverpool Location: Center to the East End

The Andaz London Liverpool is ideally located, within walking distance to sights like the Shard, the Tower of London and St. Paul’s Cathedral. It’s also within a 10-minute walk to the funky, must-see world that is the East End. Find fantastic galleries, markets, and more in Shoreditch, Spitalfields and Brick Lane. As for transport, the hotel is right next to the central Liverpool Street station.

Check-In: Andaz London Liverpool

The lobby area resembles a trendy, low lit bar set with modern, sleek furniture and contemporary art.

The check-in process was very efficient and the staff hospitable.  The classic front desk doesn’t exist here. Staff members are instead lined at open standing desks. Ali, our host, quickly set us up with our key card and offered us complimentary drinks and canapes.

The Street Art Suite

The Andaz London Liverpool has a total of 267 modern guest rooms rooms including 14 suites.  I stayed at the spacious and unique Street Art Suite.

The street art, painted across the entire length of the main wall, added fun touch of creativity to my stay.

At the core of the room was an XL king size bed – enormous, really. I loved the large working desk and international plugs.

The sparkling bathroom featured a bath tub and a separate powerful, waterfall stand-up shower.  The mini-bar was stocked with an array of complimentary snacks.

As an original railway hotel, it is situated in a busy urban corner of London, yet the room was very peaceful and quiet.  Excellent Wi-Fi access and fitness center access were complimentary as well.

Breakfast at the 1901

There are several of restaurants at the Andaz London Liverpool and the 1901 is the ideal setting for the hotel’s incredible breakfast.  Located next door, it was once served as the gorgeous ballroom at the Great Eastern Hotel.

The expansive room breathes elegance. Its high ceilings, set with ambient designer lighting, brought out the splendor of the ballroom’s original stained glass dome.

The breakfast buffet included a selection hot dishes, croissants, fresh bread, yogurt, fruit and freshly squeezed juices. I also ordered pancakes from the a la carte menu.

Overall, I found the service efficient. As with the rest of the hotel staff, everyone was dressed smartly.

Masonic Temple at the Andaz London Liverpool

With a love of historic buildings, I learned more about another corner of the Andaz – a Grecian Masonic Temple. The beautiful structure, which dates back to the early 20th century, was so “secret” it was only found again during later construction.

Turns out, this Masonic lodge was the meeting point for the high-class fraternal organization. The original hotel was constructed, in part, by the free masons.  Today the Grecian Masonic Temple is part of the Andaz London Liverpool and is available upon event reservations.

Conclusion

I found the Andaz London Liverpool experience to be impressive including location, service, style and concept.  A plus was being surrounded by the incredible history of the place, an actual classic London railroad hotel.  I also enjoyed the art and the welcome nature of the staff.  The breakfast experience at the 1901 delivered on quality of food, service and the uniqueness of place.
