Sarakiniko beach on Milos is not your average beach. Visiting it is like stepping into another world.

Some have written that walking around Sarakiniko beach could be compared to walking on the surface of the moon (whatever that would feel like).  Now that I have spent a day at Sarakiniko, I’d have to agree. It was a moon-like experience!

Here’s a photo tour of what it was like to spend the day at this incredible Greek beach carved out of white “moon” rocks.

The Scene: Sarakiniko Beach

So where did all these white moon rocks come from?

The daily clash of the sea and the passing of time carved out Sarakiniko beach on Milos.  The volcanic rocks developed huge holes, dark caves and strange hollowed out shapes.

There was a tiny beach sitting in a cove that was full of white sand.  It was a wonder to sit there and take in the entire whitewashed landscape and its striking contrast against the blue sea.

Volcanic Past of Milos

The volcanic eruptions occurred on Milos between 70,000 to 90,000 years ago.  Those very eruptions were behind the current beauty of this striking white beach and the various colorful rock formations around Milos.  It was hard to believe that the sandy Firiplaka beach was located on the same island.

 

How to Get to Milos

Fly: Olympic Air and Aegean fly from Athens International Airport. The flight takes 30 minutes. The cost starts at €60 one way.

Ferry:  Ferries to Milos depart from the port of Piraeus. Count on more choices of departure times in the summer.  The journey ranges from four to seven hours, depending on stops and ferry type.  The cost starts at €35 one way for slow ferries. Check www.openseas.gr for updated ferry schedules.

Some of the most scenic spots on Milos are only reachable by boat.
